Chapter 52: Together Again

Ana expected to be exhausted after fast-forwarding through eight time zones, changing from a college girl on vacation to a businesswoman in the Houston airport, and finally meeting her husband and son, but she hadn't anticipated a two hour taxi ride through heavy traffic to a marina in Galveston. They couldn't converse much with a cab driver present, but that didn't matter: she dozed leaning against Matt for most of the way. The ride cost $200!

Fortunately, the marina had a yacht club with a restaurant. The smell of food perked Ana up remarkably. Husband, wife, and son eagerly sampled the area's fresh seafood: fried crawfish tails, shrimp ceviche, and grilled Gulf red snapper.

To his parents' surprise Julio declined dessert. He couldn't wait to see the yacht, and volunteered to find the slip where it was supposed to be moored and report back. Matt shared cheesecake with Ana, and once that had disappeared he ordered crème de menthe over ice for them both.

Finally, they could talk. Ana was subdued.

"I'm tired Matt, more tired than usual after a trip." She sighed. "I've done many things I regret in my life, but this time…."

"I can't agree, wife. You have a kind heart. Everyone knows that."

She looked down at the deep green liqueur and ice.

"One person's rudeness doesn't justify another's."

"On Thomo, maybe," Matt said gently. "Not here, not always. Once again, sugar, you've united the entire planet. Believe me, everyone wants to give you a medal for finally putting that jerk in his place."

He picked up his glass.

"Here," he said, holding it before her, "To your health, babe."

She barely smiled, but she raised her own glass.

"Nazd rawii. Cheers."

They sipped. The liqueur was smooth and sinus-expanding. Ana sipped again.

This wasn't the time to review his wife's harrowing scrapes. Matt changed subjects.

"Did you talk to Clio?"

"I called her from the airport. She's at home for the weekend."

"Ah, good. Did she say anything about her medical experiences?"

"A little. She said the clinic was perfect for seeing a wide variety of health problems, but she's still trying to understand what she finds and how she responds."

"How's she doing with Fergus?"

"She said they get along well enough, but he's no Rob Coombs."

"Well, it's kind of awkward for a seventeen-year-old girl to have an ex-Navy SEAL for a bodyguard. Did she mention any problems?"

"No, just that she wants to rest a few days. She's going back for the second week Monday. She saw Doro Mendoza at his art gallery exhibit in Santa Fe, though."

"Great! If the exhibit is still there the week after next, maybe we can…."

He stopped in mid-sentence. Julio was back. He pulled out a chair and sat down.

"I found the yacht! You gotta see it! The captain said we'll sail the middle of the morning tomorrow, after they install a part for their radar. But we can sleep on it tonight! It's fancy! Wait till you see the cabins!"

Matt looked at his wife. A tiny smile played at the corners of her mouth. She held up her glass of barely sipped crème de menthe.
